kiamasquare37In English, students learn to read, write, talk and listen. They learn about English language and literature, how language varies according to context and how to communicate to a range of audiences for different purposes. They learn to read for information and for pleasure. They learn about poetry, novels and plays. They gain a sound grasp of language structures, punctuation, spelling and grammar.

English is taught every day at Ss Peter and Paul with a 2hr dedicated English block in all classes.  At times other Key Learning Area outcomes and content are also integrated within this block. Students participate in a range of modelled, guided and independent activities to develop skills in Reading, Writing and Talking and Listening in a balanced approach to meet every student’s ability level.  The learning experiences are organised in a variety of ways and will include whole class, small group and individual lessons to allow a number of opportunities to meet each individual students needs.

We aim to develop every student’s skills in literacy so that they are able to apply these skills to all other subject areas and aspects of life.

The school runs the Reading Recovery program that targets Year 1 students to improve their reading skills. We also offer a variety of enrichment opportunities throughout the year within class, grade, school and external groupings.

Recently, the school has partaken in a number of professional development opportunities to improve teaching strategies of comprehension, spelling and oral language.
